Winter Oil Painting Frosty Morning Impressionist Landscape

sold
"Frosty Morning"
6x6" Oil on primed art board

Painting winter landscapes can get challenging due to the lack of color from summer and fall.  There is also the challenge of many overcast days.  Sometimes you have to dig deeper to notice the subtle beauty.  Such as the softened glow across a snowy field.

Marshmallow World Winter Oil Painting Impressionism Heidi Malott

sold
"Marshmallow World"
6"x6" oil on primed art board

"It's a marshmallow world in winter
when the snow comes to cover the ground
it's the time for play, its a whipped cream day
I wait for it the whole year round"

ha ha, no I haven't been painting in a poorly ventilated room...this song was on while I was painting today and I found it quite fitting for this scene.  The name of the song is "It's a Marshmallow World" by the one and only Dean Martin from "Dino's Christmas"

I really wish this painting could be seen in person.  The photo does not pick up the softness and subtle color very well.

Small Impressionism Paintings Original Art Heidi Malott

"December Sunset"

6x6" oil on primed art board

This winter sky is from my studio window tonight.  I am not getting used to the sun setting so early, about 5:30 pm.  By 7:00 it feels like bedtime.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I suppose depending on where you live, you do.  Oh well, the sunsets are gorgious at least.  I may do a series of these sunsets.  Have a great night!

Hawaiian Skies Sunrise near Diamond Head Heidi Malott

"Good Morning"
6x6" oil on primed masonite.

How could it be a bad morning in Hawaii?  No, I am not in Hawaii today, as a matter of fact I am having coffee this morning at home and it is 27 degrees and frosty out.

Summer Hike Impressionism Contemporary Landscape Heidi Malott

"Summer Hike"
6"x6" oil on primed masonite

When painting a landscape it is easy to be overwhelmed by all the details.  Sometimes I have to write a simple message on a post it note and stick it right on my easel:  "Simplify" or "KISS" (keep it simple sister!)

First Snow Landscape Contemporary Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"First Snow"
6x6" oil on primed art board

More like a first dusting.  I still can't believe the winter season is approaching.  We are still eating tomatoes from the garden!  This is my first painting after a long break.  I feel a little rusty.  I spent most of my time in the studio preparing my supplies.  I have missed posting and hearing from friends in art.

Twilight Lake Moon Sunset Impressionist Landscape

sold

"Twilight Lake"
previously posted 2010

Hello out there :D
I hope your summer is off to a good start.  Once again, I am hoping to have some painting time soon.  Looking forward to summer:  the kids being home, graduations, a wedding, camping, gardening, canning and other good times.

Our focus in my household right now is to get "back to the basics" at least that is my plan.  My husband may be on strike for an unknown amount of time.  A reminder that life can be uncertain and the importance of being prepared for "rainy days"  I am pretty competitive by nature and actually look forward to the challenge.  History shows us that hard times come and go and I remember my grandparents stories of resilience and self reliance during rough times in their lives.  One thing they always had was that sparkle in their eye when they talked about how much the little things in life were the most memorable.  As I get older I realize how time seems to fly by.  I think simplifying things and getting back to the basics in the day to day will be a way to slow things down a bit.

Cheers to summer, I hope it does not fly by too quickly!

West Virginia Mountains Landscape Daily Oil Painting

"Take me Home"

6x6" oil on masonite art board

My two oldest sons went on a Habitat for Humanity trip for spring break with our church's youth group.  I was very proud of them for giving their time and talents during a time that most of us would prefer to go to the beach.

This painting is quite primitive, I kind of wanted to keep on painting but there was something about it that I liked and didn't want to ruin or enhance it.  I decided to leave it as it is.  I would like to do a few variations of this scene.  The original picture is quite expansive so there is a lot to work with.

Oh, and yes the title is in reference to John Denver, but I will go into that subject in my next painting of West Virginia : )

Hereford Cattle Calf Cows Art Landscape Daily Oil Painting

"Hereford Calf"

6x6" oil on primed masonite art board

I live in the Midwest and see many cows.  I think the Herefords are my favorite to paint.  I love the color of their hides in the sunlight and those sweet white faces.  I like to simplify all the different planes on their enormous bodies

Impressionist Clouds Summer Fall Landscape Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"Gi-normous Cloud"
6x6" oil on primed art board

This painting may look familiar to some of you.  I have not been able to enjoy much studio time lately so I thought I would post one of my favorites.  Midwest landscapes are my familiar and bring much peace.  I painted this at the end of last summer.  I should be in the studio for a little bit today and hope to post a few new paintings later this week.  Have a good one!

Daytona Beach Intracoastal Waterway Florida Impressionist Oil Painting

"Spring Break, Early Morning"
6x6" oil on primed art board

This is a "wish you were here" painting.  We are not in Florida this spring.  Thankfully we are having warm weather here in the Midwest.   There is plenty of outdoor work to do, my garden is already full of weeds.  I don't even mind, it feels so good to be outside.

Have a Great weekend!

Spring Bouquet Oil Painting Still Life Floral Daffodils Art

"Spring Bouquet"
6x6" oil on primed board

My niece brought me this bouquet of daffodils yesterday.  I put it on an antique crocheted doily.  A treasured find from an estate sale years ago.  I love how the star shape mimics the flowers.

My favorite parts are the stems in the vase and the essence of the crocheted doily.

Sunset Snow Landscape Winter Spring Archive Special

sold

"Driving in the Snow"
6x6" oil on primed board
2007 archive special

The weather is confusing, but I will take it.  Spring has entered with summer weather.  Today got up to 80!  It has been about 25 degrees above normal temps for a couple weeks and will be for at least another week.  I thought it would be a nice reminder that we are not having our usual weather.  This painting is from March, about five years ago.

Another reason I am posting a painting from my archive special is because I attempted to paint today and after all my work it was a scraper.  These days can be disappointing.  But I have to remember that it will pass and these "blocks" are temporary.  Here's to another day!

Seagulls at Sunset Impressionist Oil Painting Seascape Art

"Seagulls at Sunset"
6x6" oil on primed art board

I think my creativity had drained by the time I was trying to title this painting.  My daughter looked at my post and said, dripping with sarcasm,  "way to state the obvious" mom.  I laughed and told her that is what happens when you help your husband build a garden shed, run many errands including getting said daughter's haircut,  buying paint , painting the shed floor, making lunch, sweeping the dirt clods in the entryway at least 4 times, keeping one eye on the toddler, finishing today's painting and a few more things that I am too tired to remember.  So "Seagulls at Sunset" it is.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Have fun and stay safe

Donut Painting Challenge Chocolate Glazed Doughnut Heidi Malott

"Yes Please"

Kelley MacDonald posted the donut challenge this week.  Oh dear, what a challenge of willpower.   Why did I pick my favorite donut to paint?  Why?  I have to say, I think this is the first time I have tried to paint a donut.  Thanks for the challenge Kelley.

oh, did I eat that donut, you ask?  You betcha!  Much faster than I painted it.

Spring Break Reading on the Beach Figure Contemporary Impressionism

"Take Me Away"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

Ah, a good book, the sand, the warm sun, the water...take me away!
Can you say Spring fever?
I think my favorite part of this painting are her feet. Simple but readable.  Plus who doesn't like their toes in the sand?

Horse Painting Artwork Carol Marine Painting Challenge

"Sweet Greens"

sold

6x6" oil on primed masonite

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I would focus on the horse in the challenge on Daily Paintworks after working on just the landscape.  Painting something out of my comfort zone was a challenge.  I love horses, but rarely draw or paint them.  I am disappointed in my photograph.  The highlights on the horse are warmer indicating the early morning sun.  I have already spent too much time trying to correct it.  So this will do for now.  Thank you for posting the challenge Carol, I really enjoyed it.

Carol Marine's Challenge Landscape Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

"A New Day"
sold
Daily Paintworks Challenge
6x6" oil on primed masonite

I think this is the first online "challenge" I have participated in.  One very nice thing about a challenge is the idea is laid out for you one way or another.  This works great for those days where you are just not sure what you want to paint.  Some days I can spend more time trying to figure out what to paint than actually painting and since my time is oh so limited I love the idea of a painting challenge.  This one comes from a photograph by Carol Marine on http://www.dailypaintworks.com/Challenge/07405BA5-CC99-4620-8C29-E84FAF4F2B89

The picture is a horse in a beautiful landscape and like Carol mentions you could paint the horse in this landscape or just the landscape, or just the horse, I guess.  I think I will try painting the horse later this week.  Thanks for the "challenge" Carol.

This was one of those paintings that I could just keep tweaking it here and there, I had to tell myself to stop and leave it alone :D

Honestly, I could paint a couple different layouts from this photo.  The ideas are endless.  If you follow the link you can see what I mean.  It is fun to see the different artist's interpretations.

Spring Blooms Crab Apple Tree Original Art

"Crab Apple Blossoms"
6x6" oil on primed masonite
2012

At our old house we had the most beautiful crab apple tree I have ever seen.  That tree was at least 50 years old.  Our kids loved to climb up into that tree and just sit on a branch enclosed in blooms.  We would dance under it, when the breeze kicked up the petals would rain down on us.  We would laugh about how it looked like snow at the beginning of summer

Baby Pineapple Still Life Kitchen Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Baby Pineapple"
previously posted in 2007
6x6 Oil on primed masonite

sold

I am occasionally retaking photos of some older artwork that I feel the photos may not represent them well enough.  As you can see this is a highly textured painting.  I love when the brushstrokes seem to have a life of their own.  When you can see that the image was "built" in a series of thick brushstrokes.  Nice and chunky, like pineapple...
