This is the view from my kitchen window. For a couple days while I was adjusting to the fact that our fun summer was over, I noticed the little chair in the woods. The sun caught it just right and I was mesmerized by the beauty of light. I was also reminded that the little chair sits around our fire ring where we have bonfires with friends and family. Yes, it was hard this year watching summer end but Autumn is glorious. Now I have to admit seeing the chair covered in snow may not be as welcome but it may make a nice painting ;)
I will never forget learning a valuable lesson for painting I do and for viewing paintings. Someting you may find interesting...
Painting the amazing colors of Autumn can be overwhelming and very easy to over do it with too much emphasis everywhere in the painting.
You want to let all that glorious fall color sing, but in real life the human eye can only focus on one portion of the scene at a time. Rather than overwhelming the viewer you must make the experience of viewing a painting more enjoyable. Gently lead the viewer through the painting. Finding vivid highlights and then falling on muted tones and open areas where the eye can rest and then continue to explore the paintings highs and lows. This makes for a much more enjoyable experience. You are then able to show the viewer what may have inspired you to paint this in the first place.
As the air gets colder the color gets warmer. You can see the difference in the sunlight as we turn further away from it heading into winter. For now I am embracing the beauty of Fall.
I painted this a while back and was not happy with it, so it sat on a shelf for a long time. Last week I started to paint over it and decided to see if I could make improvements instead. After using warmer tones, I was so much happier with this one. I am glad I didn't paint over this one.
Getting back into the swing of things. Last weekend our son and lovely daughter in law were married. What a beautiful storybook wedding it was. They worked so hard over the last year planning this special day. I am grateful for how well everything went. I posted some pictures on my instagram account @heidimalottart
I have been alternating between my usual style and more abstract impressions. While on this art journey I have a strong desire to explore this process some more.
Which style do you prefer? My usual style or more abstract paintings? I really enjoy both. I think and it seems, of late, I can't have one without the other. Interesting.
One of my favorite times of Autumn. Venturing out to a local orchard to pick our own apples. Of course we have to get cider doughnuts while we are there. These beautiful apples make for such a cheery little painting.
It's that time of year! The mornings are cool and crisp. Afternoons are warm and sunny. Pumpkin everything, hot cider, flannel shirts and bon fires. Autumn is delightful.
I focused on painting shapes and how the light created more shapes rather than painting pumpkins :)
I saw these out buildings while on a bike ride with my husband. I couldn't wait to paint the way the light shown on the structures and the back drop of Fall color.
