Another glorious day in the Midwestern countryside.  The soybean fields are turning yellow, leaves are changing under rolling clouds on this crisp day.

Chicago Christmas Shopping Contemporary Impressionist Painting 8x8 Heidi Malott

sold
"Holiday Sparkle"
8x8" oil on gesso masonite

Ah, the hustle and bustle of Christmas in the city.  This piece was so much fun.  A study of shapes: positive and negative, brushstrokes, color and reflections.  The paint was still wet when I took this so the dark areas are much darker and richer in the actual painting.  Please note this is a bigger painting than my usual posts.

October Surprise Autumn Landscape Oil Painting

"October Surprise"

I spent a lovely camping weekend with the family and can't wait to paint some of the beautiful fall images including a grain mill from the 1800's.  I will be busy this week.

Love the big, juicy boldness of this one.  The angle of my vantage point was fun too.

Fall Color Lane Autumn Landscape Painting Heidi Malott

"Fall Color Lane"
6x6" oil on gesso masonite board

Sometimes I take for granted the beautiful fall foliage.  Probably because I am very fortunate to live among it's beauty and drive by it everyday.  However, I mustn't take it for granted because the cold, gray winds of winter are around the corner.  Check out the changes of the season in your area.

Portrait Young Girl Daily Oil Painting

"Young Girl"
6x6" oil on gesso masonite

A change of pace for me.  I don't do portraits very often.  This was fun.  This young girl is full of life and sparkle!  Very sweet.  This little study is for sale because it is represents no one girl in particular but girls in general.

Canadian Geese Fly South Autumn Landscape

"Autumn Joy"
2008 revised 2014
6x6" oil on gesso board

Remember this painting?  I pulled a few out of the archives and decided to breathe some new life in this one.  I will give you a hint, it has something to do with an addition of birds.

Girl Picking Apples in Orchard Daily Painting Heidi Malott

"Picking Apples"
6x6" oil on gesso board?

What artist could resist a child picking apples in an orchard?  A timeless scene that I could not wait to paint.  This one was good exercise for me too.  I love painting figures but I realized I don't do it enough.  Thanks for stopping by!

Autumn Skies Soybean Fields Fall Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Autumn Skies"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

The sunset over the soybean fields was breathtaking.  The clouds were so unique.  They were dark yet light very swirly hmm...not very scientific haha.  This picture doesn't do the color justice but this will have to do.

Boy Picking Pumpkin Fall Autumn Daily Oil Painting

sold
"The Best Pumpkin"
6x6" oil on gesso

On a recent trip to a you pick pumpkin patch the children were told to pick their very own pumpkin.  Along with instructions to pick one that you could wrap both arms around in a hug.  Not too big, not too heavy because it was yours to carry the rest of the time at the pumpkin patch.  The kids were fun to watch as they meticulously picked the best one.  Some found theirs right away, some searched and searched.  Of course there were a couple that picked one a bit too big but insisted that they could manage.  So fun to watch how proud they each were with their special pumpkin.

Patio Floral Autumn Bouquet Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Autumn Bouquet"
6x6" oil on gesso board

The growing season is coming to an end.  This pot of flowers on my back deck survived pea-sized hail this afternoon.  I honestly can't remember the last time I did a floral still life.  This was a lot of fun.  My goal was to keep it fresh!

You Pick Apple Orchard Little Boy Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"The Perfect Apple"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

What a fun afternoon at a local apple orchard.  My little guy, among many schoolmates had a great time picking their own "perfect" apples.  The trees were a dwarf variety, or maybe pruned that way, making it fun for the little ones to explore and pick.  The day seemed like it was right out of a storybook.

Autumn Harvest Golden Fields Contemporary Impressionist Painting

"Autumn Harvest"
6x6"oil on gesso art panel

I can't drive anywhere this time of year without wanting to stop and take pictures or paint right there on the spot.  The landscape transforms so quickly.  I like the softness of this one, very tranquil.
