Alla prima Purple Dusk Landscape Oil Painting

"Purple Dusk"
6x6"
Oil/primed masonite

I started out with a wash of transparent medium orange.  Sketched in some details with a brush and layered in some paint like icing, nice and thick and juicy!  Of course wet paint is a bit difficult to photograph so I may post another pic soon.

Night at the Philharmonic 9x12 Painting Orchestra Embassy Theater

"Night at the Phil"
9x12"
oil/primed ready to hang art board
no frame needed

From the same theater I painted a couple days ago.  A lovely evening at the philharmonic.  The dark colors are difficult to capture digitally.  They are much richer and full of warm and cool tones.  They are not flat black.  I don't own a tube of black paint, if you do, throw it away.  You will be much happier with your work if you do, trust me.  Your paintings will be more harmonious and more relate-able to the viewer.  I get my favorite dark tones mixing oranges with blues.  Give it a try.

Philharmonic Embassy Theater 9x12 Interior City Impressionist Painting

Detail-

"Intermission"
9x12"
oil/primed artboard 3/8" thick
ready to hang-no frame needed

My daughter and I enjoyed an enjoyable evening at the philharmonic at Ft. Wayne's Embassy Theatre.  I snapped some shots from the upper level and finally got a chance to work on a painting.  I haven't painted this large in a while and this took me a few days to work out.  I tried to keep it painterly yet readable with all the architectural details.

If you click on the picture you can see the details a bit better.

Contemporary Impressionism Summer Melody 8x10

sold
Summer Melody
8x10 inch
oil on primed art panel
ready to hang/dovetail slot

This painting was inspired by a smaller version I did years ago.  I like the way the brushstrokes create vibration and broken edges in this painting.

Amusement and Water Park Boardwalk Indiana Beach Original Oil Painting

Summer Memories
6x6 inch
oil/primed art board

Summer is here.  The kids are on school break.  I set up two easels on my back screen porch.  One for me and one for whichever one of the kids wants to join me.  My goal is to paint at least a few hours a week this short break without cutting into family time.  I figure I have a better chance of squeezing in more time if my painting area is more accessible.  Yesterday I was joined by my six year old who did a great drawing of a race track.  I completed this one from a recent trip to a nearby amusement part.  This nostalgic park opened in 1926.  It is no rival to the larger parks today, however, it is full of charm and offers a fairly good range of fun from thrilling to entertaining.  I hope this park continues to improve and maintain what it has to offer.

Farmers Market Fruit Vegetable Stand Figures Original Oil Painting

Morning Market Stop
6x6 inch
oil/primed hardboard

I am happy with the simplified details and strong morning light.  Of course I spent way too much time trying to get an image that best shows this painting, but I think it looks much better in real life.  hmmm...wet paint and dark shadows are difficult to photograph.

Industry Sunset Water Tower Original Oil Painting

Industry Sunset
6x6 inch
oil/primed masonite

Thick and thin.  Transparent layers of thin oil washes and then juicy thick strokes of oil paint make up this mundane yet interesting landscape.

Golden Delicious Apple Orchard Daily Oil Painting

sold
Golden Delicious
6x6 inch
oil/primed masonite

A wet in wet alla prima painting.  When painting in this style you can't help but remember to put in a brushstroke and wipe your brush often and proceed otherwise you end up with a lot of muddy color and lacking value.  This also reminded me to step back often and study my progress.  Sometimes it is all too easy to forget that important part of painting.
Everyone is worn out here after one of my sons graduated from high school this past weekend.  His party was a success despite intermittent rain showers.  I am actually surprised at myself for getting into the studio today.

Marshland Sunset Impressionist Landscape

sold
Marshland Sunset
6x6 inch
oil

The clouds seemed to form a language of their own written in the sky at sunset.  This serene evening called for a delicate brushstroke.
