Kids Sledding Winter Landscape Watercolor Painting

"Winter Break"  6x9" watercolor on 140lb cold press acid free paper. The kids are home from school this week.  My goal is to get outside when we can for some fresh air.  My youngest was terrified of sledding last year, now he insists on going downhill him self, screaming with joy the whole way down.

I have not made much time to paint and when I do I can't focus well.  Here is a little watercolor I did.  I forgot to take a picture of it before nightfall, I will definately post a better pic tomorrow.

Drop me an email if you are interested in any of my watercolors, I will take offers.
Thanks

Winter Landscape Snow Fields Sunset Clouds Daily Painting

"Color in Winter"
6x6" oil on primed panel

Painting the winter landscape can be tedious work at times.  Most trees are dormant along with all other vegetation.  This leaves the landscape with little color and not many values from light to dark in the dim overcast skies.  The sun makes such a difference in a landscape.  Especially the setting or rising sun.  Colors flood those gray areas and the snow creates a blank canvas for a spectacular show.

Contemporary Impressionism Abandoned Building Urban Painting

"Abandoned Building"
6x6"  oil on primed panel
I painted this in 2007 and never got around to posting it.  I have been enjoying my children's Christmas break from school.  I will try to paint a little if I get a chance.   Our usual schedule begins after the new year and I will be back to painting more frequently then.

Enjoy your week as 2010 comes to a close.

The Blessed Mother Virgin Mary Oil Painting & Studio

"Nativity"
This is a painting I posted back here in 2007.  It is a painting highlighted from my Studio Sale.  The details of this sale can be found at the top of this blog.

I spent most of my weekend playing the part of Santa's elves with my husband; shopping, wrapping, shopping....whew... The dynamic is pretty fun this season with three teens and a two year old.  Of course every year is.  I do plan on painting a little today (Monday)  and hopefully a couple days during this very busy week :D so please check back to see some new paintings.   Peace!

Contemporary Impressionism Tree Line Landscape and Holiday Sale

"Tree Lines"  6x6" oil on gesso artboard
I am pleased with this painting for its economy of brushstrokes.  I was able to say what I wanted without getting caught up in detail.  Every painting is a journey and sometimes they flow easily which is so rewarding, especially after the inevitable occasional painter's block.

Contemporary Impressionism Indiana Landscape

"In the Woods"
6x6" oil on primed panel

I live in a neighborhood in the woods.  Here is a view from my studio window.  You may think "how romantic"  Minus the houses, cars, roads, mailboxes etc.  It was actually a bit challenging to "see through" these things and make this work.  Pretty fun and sometimes you need a view without distractions.  A few years ago I had the pleasure and great fortune to paint with, Fred Doloresco, an amazing artist that taught me so many things about plein air painting.  I will never forget him mentioning a time when he was painting at one of Don Stone's workshops and Mr. Stone walked up to him and said "Why are you painting that in your picture?"  "Would you paint an elephant if it walked into your scene?"  A very important lesson to remember and always makes me smile.

Impressionist Moonrise Sunset Skies

sold

"Man Walking with Horse"  As the sun set in the West the moon ascended in the east making for an unusual and beautiful sky.  The kids were talking about how the clouds looked like a man walking with a horse, hence the title.  Now that I look at it online this December evening, it could be Joseph walking with Mary on a camel, hmmm

Winter Garden Holly Snowy Landscape and Christmas Sale

sold
"Winter Garden"  My resin birdbath is one of those things you should apparently bring inside over the winter.  The freezing temps made it crack the first winter we had it, of course it probably didn't help that it had rainwater in it.  Anyway, my nice birdbath that I got for Mother's Day is now a fancy plant holder.  I think it looks pretty nice with holly sprigs and berries in the snow.

I would also like to share with you a fun blog I enjoy visiting called  "Darby's and Pumpkin's Daily"   The creator of this blog has invested in a few of my paintings recently and was so kind to post on her blog the coolest and creative way of displaying a small daily painting.  This delightful idea would work for any small painting and it is very economical.  My daughter and I love to visit her blog for the great pics and fun antics of Darby and Pumpkin.  Thank you Melissa, for the shout out and wonderful idea.

"Winter Slumber" Snowy Landscape Painting

Beach Figure Reading via a Kindle Contemporary Painting

sold
"High Tech Reader"
Yep, even on the beach.  It is pretty amazing to be living amongst a time of everchanging technology.  I know, it makes me feel old saying that.  I sound like my parents, when I talk about things we had "when I was a kid...".

Winter Fields Snow Landscape

sold
"Winter Fields"  The different fields looked like a patchwork quilt after the snowfall.   What a treat, we have had quite a bit of snow this year.  Some people complain about the snow, but I figure if it is going to be this cold it might as well snow.  The sleeping land is much prettier in a blanket of snow and there are things to do, like sledding, skiing, ice skating or just watching from the warmth of your home.

"First Snow"  With all the snowy gray days, I had a bit of difficulty getting a good image for this painting.  I will repost a picture when I have some better lighting.

Couple Figures Beach Sunset Painting Contemporary Impressionism

"People Watching"  A young couple on the beach in Hawaii.  We didn't think there would be much of a sunset, but the clouds cleared out just enough for a spectacular show.  6"x6" oil on gesso board.

Mother and Child Beach Painting Contemporary Impressionism

"Mother and Child on the Beach"

A young mother and her itty bitty baby.
6"x6" oil on gessoboard.

Ugh, I have to say, I have hit the artist BLOCK.  I have had more scrapers than I can count lately.  I am trying to do what I always do when this happens;  keep on painting in hopes to paint through this, look at my favorite artists work for inspiration, eat chocolate, take a short nap, eat chocholate chip cookie dough, the list goes on...but nothing is working yet.  These blocks come and go and they happen to most of us one time or another.  I appreciate you stopping by for the good, the bad and the scrapers.  Cheers!

Winter Landscape Snow Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

"Winter Skies"

There is something so peaceful and quiet in the Midwest landscape during winter.  The air is cold, the clouds hang low and the fresh, soft snow acts as a buffer to any noise.

Snowy Ridge and Randy Higbee Gallery Exhibit Costa Mesa, CA

"Snowy Ridge"
Winter temps are here to stay.  I do love the contrast of the cool blues of the reflective sky on the snow and the warm glow of the setting or rising sun as it shines on the dry grasses and scrub.

There are so many varieties of palm trees, but they all conjure up the same feeling for me.  A sign of a warm, tropical place and the polar opposite of my current location.

Contemporary Impressionist Landscape Green Study

Study of greens in an overcast environment.
6"x6" oil on primed artboard.
Painting on an overcast day can be a challenge.  I enjoy the exercise, though, of trying to capture those subtle grayed down greens.

Chickens Roosters Painting Large 9x12 Contemporary Impressionism

"Feeding Her Chickens"  9"x12"  Oil on primed artboard.
One of the few larger paintings on this blog.  This painting was done a couple years ago, so it is dry and ready for a home.  I have to say it is one of my favorites due to the rich color, texture and subject matter.

Texas Landscape Ranch near Amarillo Painting Heidi Malott

"Two Little Birds
 ~
Texas Ranch Landscape"

6"x6" oil on primed artboard.

I have been jumping around on subject matter lately. I like to mix things up so I don't get in a rut. So I enjoy checking out my archives from past trips. Thankfully I was able to plein air paint a lot this fall. The weather is changing quickly though and I have been back in the studio the last week or so due to a very busy toddler, colder weather and my oldest who is recovering from a tonsillectomy. Never a dull moment around here. I hope to do some more Southwest paintings over the next few days. So stop in anytime to see the latest "still wet" paintings.

Beach Figures Contemporary Impressionist Painting

"Vacation Play"

Adults and children alike love to play in the waves as they crash on the beach. I am happy with how the waves turned out. The brushstrokes are all "swirly" with a change in value and color, just the way I hoped to achieve. (warning: you may occasionally come across less-than-technical terms in this blog :) This painting is 6"x6" oil on artboard.
