Barn Painting 9x12 Rural Landscape Old Truck Contemporary Impressionism

"Greener Pastures" 12"x9" oil on canvas. As you see, this is a highly textured painting. I love how it adds to the feel of this landscape with the old broken down truck. A lot of farms seem to have an old truck "put to pasture". Merry Christmas Eve.

Hereford Cow Painting Contemporary Impressionism Cattle

"Morning Rush Hour"
 6"x6" oil on panel.

No rush here on this peaceful morning. I ran out of time before the sun went down leaving me with some poor pictures of this painting. I will post a new one soon.

Cow Painting Cattle Original Art Contemporary Landscape

sold
"Herd on the Horizon" 6"x6" oil on panel. I really enjoy the "alla prima" wet in wet process. It keeps the painting fresh, not bogged down. The essence of the moment captured in minimal brushstrokes.

Contemporary Winter Landscape Painting Snow Ridge Hill Twilight

"North Light"
6"x6" oil on panel.

A winter landscape inspires many artists whether they are a painter, writer, poet or musician. I had fun simplifying the details and focusing on the subtle value changes and neutral warm and cool colors of the snow in the dimming twilight.

Indiana Fields Contemporary Impressionism Landscape Painting

"Soybean Fields"
6"x6" oil on panel.

Once in a while I will have a day where I spend more time trying to figure out what I want to paint than I actually spend time painting. I think this happens if I get in a rut. This explains why somedays I will paint cow after cow and then all of a sudden I throw in a beach scene or some other subject matter. Most days I just start painting shortly after I enter the studio. Otherwise, I would have a whole lot of nothing! I have had a few people ask me how do I find time to paint everyday. I recently responded in one of my posts: "I don't know. I wish I could paint more :) but I am grateful when I do. Somedays the laundry piles up and the dust bunnies unite. I heard a saying once, "the less time you have, the more you get done" I find this very true.

"City Sidewalks" 8"x8" oil on panel. After the sun went down the sky was still a very royal blue. The perfect backdrop for the holiday lights. This is the first time I have painted on this size, it seems considerably larger than the 6"x6" I am used to in my daily painting. A fun, colorful, contemporary piece. "Chicago in Winter" 9"x12" oil on stretched canvas. I love to paint crowds of people. I focused on shapes edges and negative areas. I really had a difficult time getting a decent digital image of this. I think it looks better in person.

Winter Landscape Snow December Woods Painting

"First Snow"
This is what I woke up to this morning. Our first snow of the season. The kids were pretty excited. It wasn't a "snow day" but their buses were running late. Painting snow can be tricky especially in the woods. You dont want to get too busy with details yet capture the delicate branches and somber grays.

6"x6" oil on panel.

Crows in Golden Wheat Painting Wheatfield Autumn Trees Landscape Contemporary Impressionism

sold
"Crows in Golden Wheat" 6"x6" oil on masonite. The autumn trees and fields were golden especially in the sunlight. The contrast of the black crows was breathtaking. Of course anytime I see crows feasting in the fields I immediately think of Van Gogh or Tipi Hedron in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"

Arizona Red Rock Southwest Landscape oil Painting 11"x14" Monument Valley area

sold

click on pic to enlarge view
"Calm before the Storm" We had left the Grand Canyon and were heading towards Colorado. Seeing the Southwest for the first time is hard to put in words. You see the land in pictures but not until you see everything in person are you really amazed. I grew up around corn and soybean fields. I am used to seeing storms roll in but nothing like this. The formations and elevations made me feel like I had landed on another planet. I have always loved Edgar Payne's amazing paintings of the west, now I see his inspiration first hand. This is one of just a few large pieces posted on this blog it is 11"x14" on Raymar canvas board. click on "southwest" label below to see similar paintings

"Moon Rising" 6" x6" oil on primed masonite.

This is a nearby wetland preservation named Eagle Marsh. As I drive by it is always fun to see how many different birds you may find. Especially in this old dead tree. The moon rising at dusk was an irresistable sight.

Tennessee Mountains Driving at Dawn Oil Painting

"Tennessee Morning"

A couple weeks ago my family and I were driving through the Tennessee Mountains. It was very early in the morning and the fog from the night before was burning off. The fog still lingered in some areas making the landscape blue and hazy. The sun lit up the bare trees here and there. This was fun and challenging.

Barn Painting Red Barn Contemporary Rural Landscape

sold
"Big Barn Little Barn" Boy did I struggle for a time on this one. I scraped and started over a couple times especially in the sky. It was a gray day, light sky with dark gray clouds rolling through at a fast clip. It was cold and damp. Finally I think I got what I was trying to "say". I really like the texture throughout. My camara did not, especially in the light sky. This painting is 6"x6" oil on primed masonite artboard.

Children Impressionism Painting Contemporary Siblings Boy Girl Brother Sister

sold
"Children Exploring" I have painted this in my head many times. A picture of two of my children climbing on rocks, has been sitting in my easel drawer for years. I sat in my studio uninspired and ready to go fold laundry instead. I came across the photo and that was enough. The laundry would have to wait. I have always loved old impressionist paintings of children. I am glad to finally paint it. Maybe I need to do this more often. hmm....

Sheep Sunset Painting Autumn Impressionism Alla Prima Daily Art

sold
Somedays painting can become too methodic. I started thinking how easy it is to forget what inspired me to paint something in the first place. Having very little time before the baby awoke from his nap, I picked up the brush and started painting from the "leftovers" on my palette. Pushing paint with only color and value in mind, I ended up with one of my favorite paintings. It was fresh and full of unmixed color. It is important to let our inspiration "drive" with our skills riding "shotgun". Painting everyday allows this experience to blossom.
