Southwest Desert Art Landscape Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Jagged"
oil on canvas panel
6x6 inch
2018

I am not sure which is more jagged the  landscape or dramatic clouds.  Either way I love switching gears from my Midwest landscapes to other worldly landscapes such as the Southwest.

Desert Bloom Arizona Cactus Original Oil Painting Heidi Malott

Desert Color
oil on panel 2018
6x6"

I have wanted to paint these cacti for a while.  Their color is amazing.  They don't grow in Indiana so I used reference materials from Pixabay.

Southwest Landscape Desert Contemporary Landscape 8x8 in

SW Sun
2015
oil primed masonite
8x8 inch
$135

I know I have said this before, but after painting on the little 6 inch squared I can't get over how much bigger these 8 inch squared paintings look in comparison.  I guess if you think about it a 6x6 is 36 square inches of surface area while an 8x8 is 64 square inches, so that is a considerable difference.  whoa, that is about as far into math  I am going to tread, haha.

Weather changes quickly in the desert.  You may have sunshine and can watch a storm on the horizon.   So beautiful!

Beauty in the desert landscape.  The greens of the desert mean strength and hardiness in their unforgiving environment.

Southwest Landscape Desert Original Oil Painting 8x8" Heidi Malott

Desert Color
8x8"
oil on panel

What a busy week of painting.  I have been working on some larger pieces but I wont be able to post them just yet.

This painting is from 2015.  Another 8x8" which is a little larger than my usual daily paintings.

Stormy Skies Southwest Landscape Contemporary Impressionism

Stormy Skies
6x6 inch
oil on primed masonite

The storm on the horizon and the sun in the foreground made the desert color muted yet still highlighted.  Very interesting.

The hazy blues and purples in the distance really make the desert greens and yellows pop.

6x8 Desert Wildflowers Southwest Oil on Canvas

sold
Southwest Wildflowers
6x8 inch
oil on canvas panel

Another larger piece from my usual 6x6.  I also cannot remember the last time I have painted on canvas.  These flowers grew right along the roadside and resembled mini sunflowers.  Their yellow was complimented by the purples and blues of the elevations in the distance.

Near the Painted Desert Southwest Series 3 of 3 Oil Impressionism

sold
"Painted Desert"

6x6" oil on masonite

This is the last of my 3 day Southwest series.  I have to say, though, that I may continue to do some more later this week.  The desert makes me think of one my favorite painters, Edgar Payne.  His desert paintings are stunning.  If you haven't seen his work check it out on Google, you wont be disappointed.

Southwest Desert Sky Clouds Contemporary Impressionism

"Southwestern Desert Sky"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

I am happier with this in person than I am looking at it on the monitor.  It looks softer and more luminescent in real life, I promise you.  I took many photographs and this will have to do for now.  Thanks for stopping by!

Contemporary Southwest Landscape Arizona Desert Painting

Southwest Landscape Study
6" square oil primed masonite

I love the silvery greens against the warm tones in the western landscape.  This painting was another exercise of thick and thin layers.  I focused more on the colors and overall shapes rather than a lot of fussy detail.

Arizona Desert Road in Page, near Lake Powell Painting

This intersection is at Hwy 98 and Coppermine Rd.

6"x6" oil on primed masonite.

While looking back through my pictures from our trip, this caught my eye. I liked the vastness of the desert and this road that stretched out into it. Off in the distance this huge industry with smokestacks "almost" blendid in with the rock formations. I think it was a powerplant near Lake Powell. Anyway, this was a detour point for us, unfortunatly. Our tired, OLD RV was acting up again :/ and we decided we better cut out seeing the canyons in Utah, so we turned around here and headed back east towards Colorado.
