Winter Landscape Painting Snowy Fields of Slumber

"Snow Fields of Slumber"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

originally posted 2010

oh dear, I sat here and wrote a post about the Christmas season and all the hustle and bustle and trying not to stress during such an important time that has much more to do with such things and poof, it didn't save.  Hah, well I am out of time so I guess this will have to do.  I know you are busy too!  Try to take time for the little things for they become the big things that make the best memories.

Revisiting a painting I did in 2010.  Earlier this week I was going through the archives and found some of my favorite paintings that I wanted to share.
They are still available and need a good home :)

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you got to spend some time with loved ones this week!

9x12 Children Impressionist Paintings Boyhood Memories

"Bug Huntin'
9x12"  oil on gesso primed masonite

This painting brings back memories of my boy's childhood adventures.  The brilliant sun shining on their heads was irresistible in this natural setting on a hiking/camping trip years ago.

As most of you parents know, another name for this could be "Fleeting Moments"

Morning Light Landscape Oil Painting

sold
"Peaceful Light"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

Hey, I have something new here!  At the top right of my blog you will find "Gallery View".  This will allow you to see many little "thumbnails" of my paintings at once in a gallery view.  Enjoy!

I am not a jump out of bed morning person, do those exist by the way?  However, when that alarm clock goes off well be the sun does, I have to get up.  Once I have a few sips of coffee and not a moment before (even the dog respects this :) I am starting to function.  Despite that, I love early morning.  I love the quiet, the light, the peacefulness.  I very rarely sleep in, but if I do, I feel like I missed something from my day.  If you are still reading, haha, I tried to capture a bit of that feeling in this painting.  Peace!

Snowy Landscape Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

"Snowy Landscape"

6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

Gray winter skies hang low over the snowy landscape.  Time to switch gears from summer and fall.  All those neutral colors and many shades of gray.  Makes very good exercise in really looking at color and value.  Especially with snow and its amazing reflective qualities.

Deer Crossing Nature Painting Contemporary Impressionism

Sold
"Deer Crossing"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

I am so glad I got a pic of this deer.  I couldn't wait to paint it.  While driving through the countryside I pulled in to a lane to turn around.  As I was backing up 5 doe crossed the lane and darted into the woods.  The last girl stopped in the sunlight to see what I was doing.  Just enough time to get a few pics.  So awesome!!

Driving To You Everyday Paintings Everyday Places Original Art

"Driving To You"

6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

This little oil sketch is a "snapshot" of an any day occurrence.  Those little parts of our busy day that go unnoticed to most.  Unless you are a romanticist at heart.  They go through life noticing the "beauty" in odd places and if they aren't careful, just about walk or drive off course while admiring it.

Late Fall Autumn Woods Landscape Original Art

"Late Fall"
6x6 oil on gesso primed masonite

I painted this from a window looking out into the woods.  Too cold for me to be outside.  Hey, I am getting old.  Today's high was 34 F and snow flurries.  This study took a lot of squinting to see all that muted autumn color among many trees.  If you step back a few feet from this painting, all those dabs of color seem to come to life.

Dancing Trees Contemporary Landscape Daily Oil Painting

"Dancing Trees"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

The trees on the edge of this farmer's field seemed to dance in the sunshine.  Made me smile.  I think the farmer must have trimmed them up high for more sunlight along his field.

Holy Family Portrait Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

more available
"Holy Family"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

Some of you may have seen this image floating around out there somewhere.  I painted a similar one years ago and have had more requests than I can count of using an image or purchasing the original.  Once I create a painting, I move on and really don't have the desire to paint it again.  This one is the exception.  The Christmas season is fast approaching and I will most likely be too busy to paint many of these.  Right now I have two, dry and sitting on my desk.  They are not reproductions, they are still original oil paintings and as you can see if you look back at a couple others that I have posted over the years they are similar but still vary in brushstroke and color.  I really cannot describe the feelings I had when I first did a painting of the Holy Family.  I was drawn to do it and glad I did.  I am very ready to embrace this wonderful time of year.  Contact me if you would like to purchase a 1 Season rights to print this picture on your Church bulletin or program during Christmas.

Black Angus Cows Hillside Autumn Landscape Daily Painting

"Autumn Angus"

A delicate brushstroke day.  I took care not to overdo the fall colors,  Subtlety rather than blaring color matches this serene view.

Looks Like Rain Autumn Fields Landscape Heidi Malott Original Paintings

Sold

"Looks Like Rain"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

I loved the muted Autumn colors on this overcast afternoon before the rain.  The wind and rain knocked most of the leaves down and most of the fields are harvested.

Contemporary Impressionism Sunset Crowning Figure Painting

"Sunset Crowning"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

This young girl bathed in the setting sun is full of mystery.  What is she doing, where is she going, who is she.  I love when a painting draws me in and invites me to ponder the story.  Some paintings are choreographed from beginning to end but some bring on a life of their own and ask more questions than they answer.  Hope that makes sense, if not carry on, it's just me pondering...

Spring Mill Park Creek Stream Babbling Brook Impressionist Painting

"Natural Spring"
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

Now this is a subject I have not painted much.  This is a natural spring that flows from a cave in Southern Indiana.  Moving water is a challenge, I always admire such paintings.  I really tried to capture the feel of the moment without getting to lost in detail, yet say enough so that the painting reads well.  I really had to resist tweaking and dabbing and just step back and put my brush down.  Hope this one works.

Pumpkins For Sale Farmer's Market Contemporary Painting Impressionism

"Pumpkins for Sale"
2006
6x6" oil on gesso primed masonite

Curious!  I just realized this is not posted on my blog.  Well, here it is...

A day at the farm.  A pile of pumpkins wait to be picked for jack-o-lanterns or pie or maybe both.

Chicago Christmas Shopping Contemporary Impressionist Painting 8x8 Heidi Malott

sold
"Holiday Sparkle"
8x8" oil on gesso masonite

Ah, the hustle and bustle of Christmas in the city.  This piece was so much fun.  A study of shapes: positive and negative, brushstrokes, color and reflections.  The paint was still wet when I took this so the dark areas are much darker and richer in the actual painting.  Please note this is a bigger painting than my usual posts.

October Surprise Autumn Landscape Oil Painting

"October Surprise"

I spent a lovely camping weekend with the family and can't wait to paint some of the beautiful fall images including a grain mill from the 1800's.  I will be busy this week.

Love the big, juicy boldness of this one.  The angle of my vantage point was fun too.

Fall Color Lane Autumn Landscape Painting Heidi Malott

"Fall Color Lane"
6x6" oil on gesso masonite board

Sometimes I take for granted the beautiful fall foliage.  Probably because I am very fortunate to live among it's beauty and drive by it everyday.  However, I mustn't take it for granted because the cold, gray winds of winter are around the corner.  Check out the changes of the season in your area.

Portrait Young Girl Daily Oil Painting

"Young Girl"
6x6" oil on gesso masonite

A change of pace for me.  I don't do portraits very often.  This was fun.  This young girl is full of life and sparkle!  Very sweet.  This little study is for sale because it is represents no one girl in particular but girls in general.

Remember this painting?  I pulled a few out of the archives and decided to breathe some new life in this one.  I will give you a hint, it has something to do with an addition of birds.

What artist could resist a child picking apples in an orchard?  A timeless scene that I could not wait to paint.  This one was good exercise for me too.  I love painting figures but I realized I don't do it enough.  Thanks for stopping by!

Autumn Skies Soybean Fields Fall Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Autumn Skies"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

The sunset over the soybean fields was breathtaking.  The clouds were so unique.  They were dark yet light very swirly hmm...not very scientific haha.  This picture doesn't do the color justice but this will have to do.

Boy Picking Pumpkin Fall Autumn Daily Oil Painting

sold
"The Best Pumpkin"
6x6" oil on gesso

On a recent trip to a you pick pumpkin patch the children were told to pick their very own pumpkin.  Along with instructions to pick one that you could wrap both arms around in a hug.  Not too big, not too heavy because it was yours to carry the rest of the time at the pumpkin patch.  The kids were fun to watch as they meticulously picked the best one.  Some found theirs right away, some searched and searched.  Of course there were a couple that picked one a bit too big but insisted that they could manage.  So fun to watch how proud they each were with their special pumpkin.

Patio Floral Autumn Bouquet Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

"Autumn Bouquet"
6x6" oil on gesso board

The growing season is coming to an end.  This pot of flowers on my back deck survived pea-sized hail this afternoon.  I honestly can't remember the last time I did a floral still life.  This was a lot of fun.  My goal was to keep it fresh!

You Pick Apple Orchard Little Boy Daily Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"The Perfect Apple"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

What a fun afternoon at a local apple orchard.  My little guy, among many schoolmates had a great time picking their own "perfect" apples.  The trees were a dwarf variety, or maybe pruned that way, making it fun for the little ones to explore and pick.  The day seemed like it was right out of a storybook.

Autumn Harvest Golden Fields Contemporary Impressionist Painting

"Autumn Harvest"
6x6"oil on gesso art panel

I can't drive anywhere this time of year without wanting to stop and take pictures or paint right there on the spot.  The landscape transforms so quickly.  I like the softness of this one, very tranquil.

Pumpkin Patch Autumn Fall Daily Painting Heidi Malott

"Pumpkin Patch"
6x6" oil on gesso art panel

What a fun day.  Today was field trip day for about 100 kindergartners.  An apple orchard, a pumpkin patch, lunch in the park and a very long bus ride.  Needless to say I am exhausted.  I will retake the picture for this, the paint is still wet and it is to dark out to get a better pic.  Darn, the painting looks so much better in person.  I will try to get a better image so you might want to check back on my blog later.  I am very happy how this turned out.  Not too fussy, not overdone.  Essence of pumpkin .  Goodnight all!

Paris Park Jardin des Tuileries Daily Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"Strolling the Gardens"

I can hardly wrap my brain around the fact that this garden has been around since the 1500's.  I am going to have to do some research on some of the many paintings that have been done at the Tuileries Garden over the centuries.
