Streets of Paris Art Gallery Original Oil Paintings

"Holiday Shopping"
Paris
oil on panel
6x6"

I loved the mood of the wet, gray streets during the Holidays.  An intimate view of people walking along the little shops.

What a happy change of pace.  I found a wonderful resource that other artists are raving about.  Mourgefile.com it is a website with thousands of copyright free images.  People kindly download their images for all to see and freely use.   Now, I don't  want to use these often for I feel it is very important for me to paint what I live and experience for myself.

Harvest Sunrise Autumn Landscape Original Art

Not for Sale
"Harvest Sunrise"
oil on panel
6x6"

The sunrise was so beautiful this morning.   The mottled lavender clouds and the sunlight breaking through over the dried fields.  This was one if those lucky moments when the paintbrush seems to go on autopilot and paint from the heart.  Does not happen often.  After painting intensely all day on some difficult subject matter I started to clean up for the day.  My son and husband ran out to pick up a movie and carry out.   I knew I didn't have much time but I was in the mood to just paint for fun.  Glad I did because this one was fun!  My husband ended up running into a friend and and chatted so I had a little more time to finish up.

Some of you may remember seeing this painting on my blog.  Seems like yesterday that I painted it yet it has been 5 years!  I did a fall landscape yesterday but I am not sure if it is worthy of posting.  I will have to look at it and see if it grows in me.  Right now it's just meh.

So from the archives is this little guy that is still available.

Fall Foliage Autumn Landscape Original Oil Painting

October
oil on panel
6x6"

We have had a dry fall.  This beautiful time of year goes by too quickly.

All that color can be overwhelming when painting fall landscapes.  It is tempting to go overboard trying to capture the amazing hues.  Restraint goes a long way.  If one is standing in front of a painting where every square inch is equally "blaring" in detail and color you risk overload and they move on.  Pick special areas to highlight the beauty and have the rest of the painting subtly support it.  I ran out of time to get a better picture of this I will post another that is not blurry when I get a chance.

Main Street Small Town America Original Oil Painting

"Main Street"
oil on panel
6x6"

There are so many of these small towns nestled in the heartland.  I never feel too far from home when driving through these towns even if I have never been there before.  They all have the same charm.  Some are run down and all but abandoned but many are still thriving.

Seven Child Portrait Oil Study

"Seven"
oil on panel
6x6"

A quick study of a little boy who doesn't sit still for long.  These little studies are so fun.  I feel they represent that constant motion of childhood.  A glimpse of exploration, adventure, bare feet and giggles.

I need to do more of these.

The grape leaves in fall are so beautiful.  They look like stained glass windows in the sunlight.  This attempt to capture their beauty is quite humbling.

Plein Air Warm Mocha and Homemade Bread Autumn Landscape Oil Painting

"Warm Mocha and Homemade Bread"

Yes, that is what I wanted after painting on a cold, wet morning.  I painted this swiftly on location with one brush keeping it bold and simple.

Beyond the Ridge Autumn Landscape Original Oil Painting

"Beyond the Ridge"
oil on panel
6x6"

When I was drawn to paint this scene it was the mood it conveyed more than the subject matter.  I was actually a passenger in a car on a rainy, fall evening.  This was literally at an intersection with a ditch and a hill, scraggly trees and more trees in the distant background.  I guess you could say it was the clouds that gave the moment its mood.  The dark clouds were breaking up and moving on as the sun was revealed with its bright contrast.  Even the dry grasses of the ditch were beautiful.  As were the earthy colors of autumn against the dramatic sky.

My goal was to use expressive, bold brushstrokes and color in a patchiness like the clouds and mottled lighting.

It is fall festival time.  Some of my favorites include good food, blue grass music, antiques, crafts, tractors and more.  This painting is where the boy scouts were making kettle corn.  The dads were stirring the corn in big kettles.  A fun sight to see and yummy.

Flannel Shirt and Wool Socks Autumn Landscape Original Oil Painting

"Flannel Shirt and Wool Socks"
oil on panel

The Autumn sky felt so big as cold winds blew above the dry golden fields.  You couldn't help but notice that the lines of the clouds in the sky seemed to emulate the lines of the freshly harvested land.  and yes, it is time to pull out the woolies :)

Canoe Chain O Lakes Original Oil Painting

"Canoe Chain O Lakes"
oil on panel
6x6"

My groom took last Friday off work and we went on a little adventure.  We went to Chain O Lakes state park and went hiking and then canoeing.  Such a perfectly beautiful fall day.  The channels between the lakes were crystal clear and the leaves were falling.   I took at least a hundred pictures on the lakes, I couldn't resist.  We then went for lunch at one of our favorite al fresco restaurants on the St. Mary's River.  This canoe-level view was inspiration for today's painting.
