View from Diamond Head Hawaii Oil Painting Contemporary Impressionism

"Dizzying View"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

My husband and I hiked up Diamond Head and there some amazing views from the top.  This was just a sliver of our view.  Maybe one day I will do more paintings of the amazing 360 degree views of the island.

Figures on the Beach Oil Painting Children Teens Contemporary Impressionism

"Beach Play"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

Figures on the beach.  Running, splashing, sitting, playing.  Always in motion.  I love the challenge of capturing the essence of figures on the beach.

Beachcombers Couple Ocean Beach Contemporary Impressionism

Sold
"Patient Partner"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

This couple was so adorable.  She would walk along and stop about every other foot to look for ocean treasures.  He was so patient while he walked alongside her.

Palms at Dawn Sunrise Beach Oil Painting

"Palms at Dawn"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

When we travel to the ocean with the family we always try to catch the sunrise at least once.  I love the light and promise of a new day.

The light spots reflecting on the dark wet paint is a bit distracting, I will re-post a photo once it is dry.

Ice Cream in the park 11x14 Impressionism Contemporary Art

"Ice Cream in the Park"
11x14" oil on stretched canvas
unframed

Yep, I am still cleaning out my studio, sort of.  More like organizing.  Of course it is taking way more time than I anticipated, so I thought I would throw something on here that I painted a while back.  I was inspired by the figures in the bright sun doing what many people love, getting ice cream in the park on a hot summer day.

Plein Air Florida Beach Figures Umbrellas Ocean Spray Clouds Buildings

sold

"Ocean Spray"

6"x6" oil on primed masonite. The title comes from the fact that we have had a misty ocean spray everyday this week making the horizon blend right in with the sky. Thankful for another beautiful day on the beach. As I have mentioned before, I love to paint right on the beach with all the people out doing their thing. So relaxing and theraputic. This year my husband set up an easy-up awning thing to paint under, which was great. This is my last day in Florida, I took hundreds of pics and hope to paint more from our trip when I return to colder temperatures.
(oops, disregard the cardboard in the lower left hand of the picture of this painting, I didn't realize at the time it was in the pic.)

Plein Air Autumn Impressionism Landscape 11x14" Oil Painting

Nfs
"Autumn Island"
11x14" oil on Raymar Canvas board

Wow, two large paintings posted in a row.  This one is even larger than yesterdays.  I came across a few paintings that are were still packed up in my studio from our move a few years ago.  I was kind of saddened to see them hidden away.  This is a standard size, so it would be easy and less expensive to frame.

Autumn Island is not really the name of this little island but it seemed appropriate don't you think?  This hidden gem was found after a short hike through a local nature preserve.  The hike seemed longer with art supplies and easels in tow, but it was well worth it.

9x12 Plein Air Impressionist Garden Oil Painting Rose Garden Summer Landscape

"A Place for Tea"

12x9"  oil on primed artist hardboard

This painting is from the same yard I painted from in a previous post:

I actually painted this one a few years ago.  I was cleaning out my studio and totally forgot about it.  This was painted on location, plein air.  It brings back good mornings of a beautiful morning with the early sun casting long shadows.  The gazebo back behind the walkway of roses would have been a perfect place for lunch, don't you think?

Island Beauty Honolulu Hawaii Figurative Beach Landscape Contemporary Art

"Island Beauty"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

Like the tourist in the background, I snapped hundreds of pictures while in Hawaii a couple years ago.  Here the surfboards were stuck in the sand at a surf school on Waikiki.  They caught my attention.  Not till I was looking at the pictures later did I realized this sweet very island, looking girl was caught by my camara.  So many of the young girls wore fresh flowers in their hair.  Anyway, this was a fun piece, the girl gives the painting that nostalgic look you see in the old post cards of Hawaii.

Winter Landscape Snow Trees Impressionist Oil Painting

sold
"Winter Light"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

A typical Midwest winter landscape can look barren and maybe even boring at times with the lack of color we are used to seeing during the other three seasons of the year.  However, the a neutral palette from the overcast skies, snow and sleeping earth reflect the soft glow of sunrise and sunset.  Very different from the rest of the year.

Southwest Desert Sky Clouds Contemporary Impressionism

"Southwestern Desert Sky"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

I am happier with this in person than I am looking at it on the monitor.  It looks softer and more luminescent in real life, I promise you.  I took many photographs and this will have to do for now.  Thanks for stopping by!

Autumn Impressionism Sunset Landscape Oil Painting Art

"Autumn Song"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

I have always been drawn to the "bare bones" of an artist's paintings.  Standing up close to the painting in a museum and looking at the great impressionist's brushstrokes.  Then stepping back and seeing how all the brushstrokes come together to form one piece.  The process of the painting itself is so exciting to me.  Everyone has different tastes and that is what makes art so wonderful.  There is something for everyone.  I love the layers of building up a painting.  The thin washes, the sketching, pushing paint around whether you squish it, push it or carefully lay in the paint as if you were frosting a cake.  Every bit of it is joy!

Fruit Trees Apple Orchard Oil Painting Contemporary Impressionism

"Pruned Fruit Trees"
6x6"
oil on primed masonite

This is a little embarrassing to admit.  I was amazed the first time I saw a real fruit orchard.  I had an ah-ha moment when I saw that the trees were kept small and neatly pruned enabling the fruit to flourish and be easily harvested.  The only fruit trees I ever saw when I was young were big scraggly fruit trees that were fun to climb but didn't bear much fruit.  I actually had a sense of relief when I saw a well manicured fruit orchard at one of my daughters field trips years ago.

Sand Dunes Painting Beach Umbrella Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

sold

"The Perfect Spot"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

My family enjoys camping at the Michigan sand dunes.  The hiking is killer, but once you make it to the beach, you can run all the way down hill to Lake Michigan.  During the middle of summer, there are beach umbrellas everywhere.

Summer Clouds Contemporary Impressionism Oil Painting

sold
"Summer Clouds"
6x6"

Looking forward to some plein air painting this summer.  I don't get out of the studio to paint much these days.  However, I wouldn't change that for anything.   My youngest son's childhood seems to be flying by too fast.

Dawn Landscape Contemporary Impressionism Country Road Rural Art

"Early Morning Road"
6x6" oil on primed masonite

This painting has such subtle color I really don't think this pic does it justice.  Maybe when the sun comes out around here, I will get a better photo.  I like the mood the soft tones create in this hazy, early morning landscape.

Portrait Boy and His Puppy 11x14" Oil Painting

cropped portion of:
"Boy and His Puppy"
11x14"

sold

I am in the process of completing this painting for a friend.  I am having a difficult time with getting good photographs of it.  When the paint is still wet and you have dark darks it is nearly impossible.  I really enjoyed the challenge of doing a portrait, it has been awhile.

Oh, this was too fun!!  I love the size of this painting.  It was perfect for a fun, lively piece depicting a perfect moment.  My favorite time on the beach, the golden hours, before sunset.  Especially with the girls and a fruity libation.  sigh...
