As 2016 comes to a close I am looking back on a year of painting and posting a few of my favorites that are still available.  Looking forward to 2017.

We had a very Merry Christmas with family and friends.  Made lots of food and fed a small army.  The kids are getting older so they were in and out throughout the day with other places they had to visit.  It was a lovely day and did not go by too fast this time.  I was happily exhausted by the day's end.  I sat down with my husband and enjoyed a glass of wine by the Christmas tree.

Such a busy time of year, but it was nice to work on something random in the studio today.  I needed a brain break today.  This little pond is so peaceful I will have to go back and see what it looks like now that it is frozen and snowy.

Today I tried to keep in mind that less is more.  Keep it simple.  In other words, put down as much as I can with as little as possible expressing it all with shape, tone and color.  I have been painting for years and still have to remind myself of this little tidbit.

Today brings memories of family traditions.  Since childhood Thanksgiving meant spending time together.  Today we think of those that are not at the table this year and hug those that are new to the table.

Making boyhood memories.  My son and his cousin were on a serious mission while camping.  This is actually a study of the painting I did years ago.  Sad to see it stored away.  Hopefully it will find a home one of these days.

These young women were very fashionable in the park.   The rich colors of Autumn made a beautiful backdrop to the colors and textures of fall fashion.  This was a very fun piece.  I am happy with the bold colors and lines.  Very contemporary.

This is why I never tire of painting.  Each one is a journey and even if you paint the same subject matter numerous times they can still take on a life of their own.  Once I am inspired to paint scene I go about it with my usual technical aspects of creating a painting but then, as if switching gears, the process of painting seems to move on from the technical side and on to a more creative side that gives the painting a mood or feeling.  I know that may sound hokey, but I honestly think that is what inspires me to pick up a brush year after year.  Of course some paintings don't turn out well, or I get complete "painter's block" on occasion, but after many years I have learned to enjoy the process or journey whatever the outcome.

Trying something new.  I have been wanting to go in this direction for a while.  Someone sent me an email a little while back mentioning the subject of my landscapes leaning to the abstract and I feel terrible for I must have accidentally deleted that email before I could reply.  So if you're out there and read this please know that I really appreciated your kind and thoughtful email and apologize for not responding.  Please feel free to message me.

This painting might look familiar.  I painted this scene on one of my small daily paintings.  There are a few others I would like to do the same.

"Rural Roller Coaster"  - one of my favorite memories as a kid is riding out to Grandma's farm in a 1970's sedan the size of a boat.  Of course no seat belts, and my sisters and I squealing with delight as the car went up and over the hill while our stomachs did flip flops.

I am not ready to say goodbye to summer just yet.  I was out in the garden harvesting green peppers in November!  We have had snow by this time some years.  So no ccomplaints here.

I am so enjoying painting on a larger scale.  I just have to remember to take my time and be thoughtful of my brushstrokes all of course while staying fresh and not overworking the oil paint.  Deep breath!

Chasing shadows.  That is kind of how it feels with fall being such a short season.  however this year the season has been extended with warmer temperatures.

A contemporary look at the rural landscape around me.  There is still so much color to glean from the fields this late in Autumn.  I really enjoyed simplifying the details and painting the raw colors in the light and shadows.  Focusing on bold thoughtful brushstrokes to represent the field ready for harvest.

After harvest time the fields remind me of quilting squares.  I was also pulled to paint this by how the colors play on the white barns.
