Orange Poppy Field Original Oil Painting Impressionism Landscapes

Sold
Poppies in the Wind
oil on panel
6x6"

Sometimes a painting can really show the joy that went into creating them.  The brushstrokes seem to dance throughout the painting in delight.  My studio windows are open to let the crisp fall air in and I am playing some French Cafe music on Pandora.  A good day for painting.

September Pasture Hereford Cow Autumn Landscape Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"September Pasture"
oil on panel
6x6"

What a great day in early Fall.  The air is crisp and cool.  The sun is sparkling as it filters through the trees.   I have to say I am a little ahem a lot excited about this navy blue color!  Of course it is mixed and not from a tube thank you very much ;) The blue looks especially fabulous next to the faded green grasses.

Girl and Her Kitten Oil Painting

Sold
A Girl and Her Kitten
oil on panel

I have a small ok rather large pile of misfit paintings that I go through every once in a while to either paint over or possibly salvage.  I like the figure looking off into the distance so I decided to give it another chance.

Autumn Joy First Signs of Fall Suburban Landscape Oil Painting

Autumn Joy
oil on panel
6x6"

I came across this corner the first week in September and even though the days have been warm the nights are getting cooler.  With summer still on my mind I was surprised by the signs of fall.  The blooming sedum and mums and the first dry leaves on the ground.

Nature Walk Turkey Run State Park Evening Sun Oil Painting

Soft Light
oil on panel
6x6"

The glow of the early evening sun filtering through the trees at one of my favorite places.  I am considering going back into this painting with just a few thick and juicy strokes.  I will keep it in view so I can ponder that thought.  My favorite thing in this painting is the thin ray of light outlining the one side of tree in the middleground.

Seaside Storm Clouds and Seagulls Contemporary Impressionism Heidi Malott

"Seaside Storm Clouds and Seagulls"
oil on panel
6x6"

Sometimes when nothing seems to go right in the studio I come down to two choices.  Either paint through it or put the brush down and walk away.  Last week I had a lot on my plate and must have brought it with me to the easel.  Because nothing seemed to flow.  I guess I tried both choices.  Three scraped paintings later I cleaned up and shut the studio door behind me.

After a few days and a few paintings later I picked up the 3 panels and decided one may be salvageable.   The other two will be painted over.  Today's painting had some features that I liked.  The muted tones and the brushstrokes were not overworked yet.  So this is what I came up with.  It is fresh, clean and has a nice mood to it.  I have quite a little pile of misfits that I leaf through and every once in a while I can save one, but most of these do get painted over.

Canyon Hike Turkey Run State Park Indiana artist Heidi Malott

Turkey Run in July
oil on panel
6x6"

We were so happy to get a camping trip in this summer at one of our favorite places.  The morning sun was finding its way through the trees and sandstone crevices.

There are so many details in nature.  I tried to stick with just enough and not too much.

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco Oil Painting Heidi Malott

Red
oil on panel

It is always a challenge to paint something so large and impressive on a little painting especially in a minimalist fashion.  I would like to do some more of these studies this week.

Lavender Fields Contemporary Impressionism Original Oil Painting

sold
"Pleasant Forecast"
oil on panel
6x6"

I had limited time in the studio today.  So I jumped right in drawing out a sketch for this painting and totally skipped a wash of warm color over the panel.  I think it works just fine though.  I actually think this was a happy accident.  Happy Friday Friends!  Hope you have a lovely weekend!  A little continued rest around here with my husband recuperating from knee surgery.

Cows huddled so tight on the hillside that I decided to squint my eyes and paint the planes of light and dark.

Poppy Talk Original Floral Oil Painting

Sold
"Poppy Talk"
oil on panel
6x6"

A floral study.  Poppies remind me of crepe paper.  I focused on how the sun shines on the surface of the flower and through the flower.   I am disappointed in my photograph of this painting for it doesn't show these subtleties.

Tomorrow,  more birds :)  I painted 2 more today, a robin and a tufted titmouse.  I am thrilled to show them to you soon.
