Castle or Water Filtration Plant?   Fort Wayne, along the River Greenway.   Built in 1933 in the Collegiate Gothic architectural style.  So lovely.  They sure don't make facilities like this anymore!

Contemporary Impressionism Streets of Italy Original Oil Painting

Bits of Sunshine
oil on panel
6x6 inch
2019

I feel downright giddy!  It's snowing!  Our first real snow of the season, which is really late for us in the Midwest.  I am also thrilled to be back at the easel.  This marks my first painting for 2019!  I have a couple projects to work on but needed to warm up first.

This painting and prints in 2 sizes are available.   See below.

The Rusty Dog
Huntington, Indiana
oil on canvas panel

The sun was setting and everything about this corner just had to be painted.   I think my favorite thing (besides the awesome brick building) is that sliver of light 😍, full of mood.

I just wish I had time to stop in for a pint.  Maybe next time!

Contemporary Impressionism Original Art Italy Cityscape Studio Sale Heidi Malott

sold
Laundry Day
oil on panel
6x6 inch

I found this image on pixabay.com a copyright free sight that I enjoy visiting every once in a while.  Because sometimes you just have to paint something completely different from your surroundings.  I squinted and saw shapes, laundry and architecture.  Fun, fun, fun.

Expressive and lively were my thoughts when I tackled this painting.  So much going on in these street scene and I didn't want to get bogged down in the details.  I would like to continue working on cityscapes with this in mind.

Chicago Theater Original Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
Theater
oil on panel
6x6"

I squinted my eyes and focused on painting shapes.  It was a fun process and good exercise in painting what I see and fighting my mind's eye or what our brain tells us what we see.

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco Oil Painting Heidi Malott

Red

It is always a challenge to paint something so large and impressive on a little painting especially in a minimalist fashion.  I would like to do some more of these studies this week.

Streets of Paris Art Gallery Original Oil Paintings

"Holiday Shopping"
Paris
oil on panel
6x6"

I loved the mood of the wet, gray streets during the Holidays.  An intimate view of people walking along the little shops.

What a happy change of pace.  I found a wonderful resource that other artists are raving about.  Mourgefile.com it is a website with thousands of copyright free images.  People kindly download their images for all to see and freely use.   Now, I don't  want to use these often for I feel it is very important for me to paint what I live and experience for myself.

Garnier's Paris Opera Impressionist Painting Heidi Malott

"Visiting the Paris Opera Garnier"
6x6" oil on gesso panel

First, I must thank my dear cousin, Mary Kay, for sharing photos of her recent travels to France.  When my youngest has flown from the nest I plan to travel to Europe and paint to my heart's content.

This amazing opera house was built in 1860.  One of my favorite artists, Degas, found his inspiration here for his stunning ballet paintings.  If you get a chance, check out an image of this opera house, it is breathtaking.  Here, I chose to focus on a more intimate image of a tourist on the steps of  The Paris Opera.

Architecture House Dwell Red Door Sunset daily painting oil

sold
6"x6" oil on primed art board. "Red Door" This is one of my favorite paintings. I think because of the subject matter, the time of day and the process. I am so drawn to homes with unique architectural character. So many older homes have style and art was a part of the process. An important thing that I wanted to achieve when I painted this, was to use the least amount of brushstrokes possible. Carefully placing each stroke with purpose. This sounds like it could make the painting too "tight" or "uptight" but the opposite is true. It wont have that overworked feel to it, which can sometimes happen. It is not always an easy task. It is possible to have enough brushstrokes in one painting to make 2 or 3 paintings.
