Beach Figures Contemporary Impressionist Painting

"Vacation Play"

Adults and children alike love to play in the waves as they crash on the beach. I am happy with how the waves turned out. The brushstrokes are all "swirly" with a change in value and color, just the way I hoped to achieve. (warning: you may occasionally come across less-than-technical terms in this blog :) This painting is 6"x6" oil on artboard.

Durango Silverton Colorado Painting Studio Sale Highlight

"Between Durango and Silverton, CO"
painted Aug. 2007

This little painting is a part of my studio sale (see details, top right)
There were a couple things I recently re-painted on this painting. Originally I had the porch drawn incorrectly and it stood out like a sore thumb. Also the trees needed to overlap the structure better. I think these changes made a big difference and makes a stonger painting, structurally.

Blustery Fall Day Autumn Painting Contemporary Art

"Blustery Fall Day"
6x6" oil primed panel

One of the last days with leaves on the trees. This windy weather is blowing them into the next town. Of course that doesn't let us off the hook we are getting all the leaves from everyone west of us!

Essence of Iris Contemporary Impressionism Sale Highlight

sold
"Essence of Iris" -2006
This little painting is one of my favorites, it has a myriad of color and has never been posted on my blog. Probably because I have enjoyed it in my home and never got around to posting it. Now it is time to put it out there. It is really a piece you need to stand back away from your monitor to look at. Go ahead, try it. This is one I would like to paint on a large scale some day.

Contemporary Impressionism Country Side Roads Rural Landscape Heidi Malott

sold
"Long Ride Home" 10/25/10
This painting may look a little familiar to you. That is often possible because I paint mostly what I live. My familiar. Can you spot the painting I did similar to this recently? I find it good "exercise" to paint the same locations under different conditions: time of day or season or even hour.

Autumn Tree Study Fall Foilage Impressionism Painting

sold
"Bits of Color" Looking out my kitchen window this morning felt like looking at a stained glass window. The early morning light making its way through the autumn trees broke the colors into many sparkling bits of color.

Italy Impressionism Contemporary Oil Painting Heidi Malott

sold
"Touring Rome" 10/19/10 I photographed this in the morning sun, showing the texture of the brushstrokes. It is a bit distracting so I posted another photo below. Another really fun piece. Capturing the essence of the moment is very invigorating. 6"x6" oil on primed masonite art board.

Fall Foilage Painting Contemporary Impressionism Art Heidi Malott

sold
"Autumn Essence" I painted this yesterday in the backyard while my son played in the sand box which he calls the "hand box". I think he would sleep in there if I let him.

Painting this time of year, especially plein air, can be overwhelming. As beautiful as the fall colors are it is easy to overdo it. We want to convey all that color but one can get lost in all that glorious color and end up with a very bright overloaded painting. It helps to focus on a bit of color and "gray down" the rest. This helps you focus on the amazing beauty of color. Letting it sing rather than shout. I can't tell you how many times I have painted before I actually did this. Even when we know better, it is always easier said than done.

Impressionist Landscape Woods Hiking Trails Contemporary Painting Heidi Malott

"September Hike"

I love to hike with the kids. The last time we went camping we hiked a trail alongside the lake. Our youngest practically led the way the whole time. We were amazed at his enthusiasm and had to tease his much older siblings about the fact that when they were his age they would want to be carried most of the way and complain how tired they were.

Contemporary Impressionism Clouds Landscape Heidi Malott

sold

"Outside the Box" I love when I am in "the zone" and just paint from the heart. I had been feeling under the weather the last couple of days and wasn't sure if I should paint since I was feeling better or get caught up on stuff. I am glad I headed for the studio instead. This painting may look a bit different from my usual, however, I see this feeling/style pop up once in a while. If I could just harness it for everyday. I am sure most people feel that way about a lot of things. I guess that is why it is important to try, try again and again.

Pumpkin Patch Autumn Sunrise Painting Impressionism

sold
"Frosty Morning" The "pumpkin" orange next to the cool shadows of the early morning light was so soft and complimentary. Such a fun time of year to paint. Have you picked out your pumpkins yet? I might have to put this on my plate shelf in the dining room or in my kitchen till it may find a new home...

Lotus Flower Water Lilies Garden Impressionism Painting Heidi Malott

click pic to see detail
sold
"Following the Sun" This painting was a journey, that almost ended in a do-over (scraped and painted over) It started out okay and then I found myself focusing on too many details, making the painting stiff and boring. I had to walk away from it for awhile. Not sure if it was salvageable I worked on it today. Knowing I needed to cut loose and enjoy the process, I had nothing to lose, it was already something that would get painted over if I couldn't resuscitate it. Finally, after scraping, scratching and moving paint around I became happier with it. Sometimes we have to let go and have fun. After some frustration and patience I was able to finish this little water garden study on a happier note.

Water Lilies Impressionism Painting 8"x8" Original Art Heidi Malott

sold
"Water Garden" Another larger painting than my usual daily paintings. There was so much to take in at this beautiful little edge of the pond at Lincoln State Park, Indiana. I see why Claude Monet was so mesmerized by water lilies and the reflections in the pond. An amazing and tranquil scene to behold.

8"x8" oil on primed masonite

sidenote from me: When I look at this painting online it appears busy in the tiny square alotted for my blog, however the original 8x8" looks better, tranquil, much bigger and not so busy.
